24 jun to 16 jul — Aljezur
TEATRO DE PALHA (STRAW THEATRE) is an interdisciplinary summer programme born amidst nature. It has been built with the help of a complicit group of local farmers and the mastery of Pedro Quintela, a landscape architect who imagined and planned this theatre made of straw bales. It is a totally natural space that houses within it a stage, an open-air auditorium, a bar and an exhibition space.
This new straw bale theatre brings us a new cinema programme that speaks of islands and brings a wide variety of music, a new poetic circus, and visual arts in the form of two exhibitions. A new volumetry was created for the space to offer the sensation of being inside a natural cathedral where the straw itself welcomes us in an unexpected way. Bales weighing 400 kilos rise up into multiple walls that breathe and unfold to give us the illusion of inhabiting a giant house gilded by the sun, under a sky dark with stars.
We chose the industrial area of Aljezur to return it to its original rural condition and thus transform it, even if temporarily, through artistic design.
It is in this atmosphere of country aromas that we invite everyone to come and dance, watch cinema, have a drink, enjoy a very stimulating musical programme: Orquestra Assintomática and Carlos Bica, Vera Mantero and Sopa de Pedra. Filipa Francisco and Bruno Cochat bring humour and dance, and an exhibition of strings and knots from Spain takes us to the imaginary of books that don't exist.
João Mariano's photographs will form another wall where there is a gap. They reveal memories, through images, of what has escaped in the history of the Lavrar o Mar performances.
