MEMÓRIAS DE UMA FALSIFICADORA evokes the life of Margarida Tengarrinha, focusing mainly on the long period she lived in clandestinity (1954-1974): her work as a forger, the constant change of homes and identities, the death of her partner, José Dias Coelho, who was brutally murdered by the PIDE (International and State Defense Police, a Portuguese security agency that existed during the Estado Novo regime), the separation from her daughters, and the isolation from family and friends.
In a close relationship with the audience, using very simple artefacts, an actress—accustomed to impersonating others—recreates the most important steps of Margarida's journey and gives voice to women's perspective on life in clandestinity—a life full of hardships but which the author still considers a happy life, full of meaning.
It is an opportunity to remember Portugal's recent history and to remind us that we have not always lived in democracy. We must remember so that history does not repeat itself!
