‘'My mother's name is Miquelina, born in 1935. She has lived in Mozambique for most of her life. In recent years, she has been diagnosed with dementia. It's a reality that I've lived with contradictory feelings: on the one hand, the fear of her diminishing faculties, and on the other, the fact that it has allowed me to reach a new level of understanding, somewhere between madness, tenderness and complicity. Today, when I look at my mother, I see myself more than ever. The imponderability, the madness that sometimes attacks me, and the experience of failure and ridicule are marks that I have unconsciously inherited from her and that I can only now see and understand in the light of the progressive deterioration of her memory. I have discovered my mother's sense of humour and love of dancing. Together, we laugh and do our crazy things. And in a kind of parallel reality, we're happy for a moment'.
- Miguel Pereira
The theme of memory and its loss is the leitmotif of MIQUELINA E MIGUEL, in which choreographer Miguel Pereira tries to rescue a new, tragic-comic place between himself and his mother. A delirious and tender encounter between two people, where dance, absurdity and fragility are celebrated in a space of infinite freedom to counter time and escape the inevitable.
