(Com)passos

Pedro Prista · Nélio Conceição · Sandro William Junqueira · Maria João Duarte · Paulo Quaresma · Leandro Arez — Portugal
Laboratory of Thought · Walks — M/16+

Since the beginning of 2024, anthropologist Pedro Prista, philosopher Nélio Conceição, writer Sandro William Junqueira, historian Maria João Raminhos Duarte, and artist Paulo Quaresma have been gathering at the same table to contemplate Portimão in its various dimensions, critically analyzing its temporal segments and its historical, economic, and social evolution. This reflection aimed to generate ideas and knowledge that would nourish relevant and current artistic programming. These thoughts will now be shared in four walks, called (COM)PASSOS.

Quantos mortos tem 100 anos?
Pedro Prista — PT

Cemeteries are places of memory, remembrance, and forgetfulness. They are the intersection of space and time in communities and within each of us. How many dead are there in a century? Where are they? Where did we go to die? Who came here and stayed? On this eve of All Souls' Day, let us collectively reflect on space and time and ask Death if it knows who we are in those who have passed.

Do mar à periferia: A cidade reencontra
Nélio Conceição · Sandro William Junqueira — PT

Moving through a city is like in a house. How many layers of experience does this house have? Is it possible to walk in an intimate space that at the same time feels strange to us? Starting from a compass rose that will take us from the sea to the outskirts of Portimão, wandering through the centre, our planned journey will be intimate and political, emotional and distant, tied to memory while reaching into the present as an unfulfilled desire.

Inventário Moderno
Paulo Quaresma · Leandro Arez — PT

They ask us for impressions of this southern city, so familiar to us, where we will walk again, a city that enchants us and that, at times, we detest. It is not there that the imagination prefers to take but in the dryness and isolation of life, we might perhaps remember with pleasure and envision many episodes and scenes that once seemed cold to us in vivid colours. We revisit the kaleidoscope of memory—lacking the notes we do not have and never had—and we share according to the images that emerge randomly, whatever comes out.
(Invented from "Inventory of June" by Manuel Teixeira Gomes)

Paulo Quaresma and Leandro Arez propose a participatory walk-through 20th-century Portimão on a circular route that begins (and ends) at the Jardim das Águas Livres.
